Hello all,
Here is New Zealand we have a lot of Jeeps, GMCs and commonwealth equipment. It seems that owners of original vehicles are starting to prefer to leave minor damage and evidence of corrosion in the vehicles to in a way prove the age and authenticity of a vehicle. this is because the repro parts are so good that is hard to tell originalsfrom repro over time.
it it the same in Europe or do they prefer "out of the box condition" restorations?
thanks MVNUT

Hi!
For many years it have been "better cond. than when it left the factory" restorations, but I can see that some people are trying to keep as much as possible in original condition instead nowadays. Personally I think it is nice to restore vehicles to a "field condition" with some patina left! But I think you are right about all the reproparts, sometimes it is hard to tell the difference, and if we wait 30 more years it will be impossible to say if a part is original or not. I quote (with sorrow) a Niel Young song - "Rust never sleeps".
Regards / Nick...

here in the US many of the owners are starting to do the same and leave them a bit dinged up it shows the history of the vehicle.
on my 997t truck I took the major dents out but left the dings and jams behind .

Most people I know will go for a better than factory look restoration. I dont agree with it but I respect their decision to do what makes them happy.
Strangely enough I have seen people restore jeeps etc and throw away a jeep body because it was a bit battered and rusted in places and replace it with a 'made in Taiwan repro tub' - personally I cant see the sense in that as its the character of the vehicle you are throwing away. Bottom line is I would rather drive the original with all the welds and patches cos I know it has that history and character to it and that 65 plus years ago Lord only knows what it and its driver might have seen - thats the magic that appeals to me anyway.
I have a 43 kubel I am working on and it is my intention to keep as much of the original body work as possible - just replace any rust and straighten any really bad panels etc but a battlefield look with all the bumps and knocks doesnt bother me in the slightest -doors etc I will probably use repros until I repair the originals.
Many thanks Cj
